EPA orders Massachusetts power plant to clean up act
After years of complaints from area residents, the Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the Mystic Station power plant in Everett, Massachusetts to cut back on the pollution it produces. An EPA news release says the government has struck and agreement with the plant's owner to install new equipment that should reduce particulates flowing from its smokestacks.

UNH to host state pollution prevention conference
Gov. Jeanne Shaheen and EPA New England Regional Administrator Robert Varney are among invited guests to the 10th Annual New Hampshire Pollution Prevention Conference scheduled for April 1 at the University of New Hampshire. The theme of this year's conference is "The Value of Pollution Prevention in a Changing World." Debate over clean air rules persists
Debate continues over a plan to abolish a federal rule to reduce pollution from older power plants in the United States. The so-called new source review provision would be scrapped under the EPA's proposed Clear Skies program which would allow companies to trade pollution credits under industry-wide pollution limits. Massive Antarctic ice shelf crumbles
Scientists were aghast as they watched a section of Antarctic ice shelf the size of Rhode Island collapse into pieces. The collapse was predicted, but the rapid speed at which it happened caught many researchers off guard. Stories in the New York Times and on the MSNBC Web site chronicle the event. The MSNBC story includes a series of photographs showing the shelf's disintegration.

Ford announces new no-emission hybrid vehicle
A new kind of hybrid car is on the horizon. Hybrid cars already on the road use both combustion and electric engines. This month Ford Motor Co. plans to unveil a car that mates electric technology with a hydrogen fuel cell for a zero-emission vehicle. The Associated Press reports that Ford plans to begin building the cars in 2004.

BP reduced its greenhouse gas emissions
British Petroleum has reportedly lived up to its word to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent - and ahead of schedule. Speaking on Living on Earth, National Public Radio's environmental news program, BP's CEO Lord John Browne said the company met its goal by increasing efficiency and stopping the release of methane into the atmosphere.
