New Hampshire releases environment report
New Hampshire's Department of Environmental Services has just published a state of the environment report "New Hampshire Environment 2000" a 40-page document that opens with a large section on air quality and climate change. The report says that the state's challenge, when it comes to improving air quality, is reducing emissions from a large number of small sources, including automobiles, households and medium-sized businesses. You can download the report in PDF form by clicking on this link to the DES: New Hampshire Environment 2000.

Massachusetts summer ozone worst in 13 years
Massachusetts has recorded its worst summer for ozone in 13 years. This summer, state officials recorded 27 days on which unhealthy ground-level ozone levels lingered uninterrupted for eight hours or more. The dubious record shatters last summer's count, which was an unusually low five days. The Cape Cod times Web site has the story from The Associated Press.

Focus on terrorism draws talk of conservation
Fears of war in the Middle East have invigorated talk of energy conservation among politicians and environmental activists concerned about the United States reliance on foreign oil. These concerns were apparent at a conference in Massachusetts about ways communities can reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Worcester Telegram Gazette has the story.

Well-known atmospheric researcher dies
Glen R. Cass, a distinguished atmospheric scientist who made his name investigating air pollution around Los Angeles in the 1980s, has died. Environmental Science & Technology Magazine, in which he had published many articles, reports that Cass had been battling cancer. He was 54. Cass, chair the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences department at Georgia Tech, initiated a global ozone study at 500 sites around the world that continues today. You can read more about his contributions to the field in this Environmental Science & Technology obituary.

ES&T News Briefs
This month's Environmental Science & Technology is filled with interesting News Briefs on climate-change related topics, among them: the switch from a carbon to hydrogen economy, government energy efficiency programs, environmental costs of coal and oil production, and a proposed Scottish wind farm.

Researchers study the duplicitous dust particle
Scientists know that dust plays a role in global climate change. It can help to both heat and cool our atmosphere. It can promote rain and stifle it. This article in Science News Online discusses some of the recent work in a field that is growing ever more popular: the study of dust.
