Smog season upon us
With the summertime sunshine comes both good and bad things. Smog, unfortunately is one of the downsides
of longer, hotter days. Here in New England, the smog season is already upon us. Read this story from the
Environmental Protection Agency summarizing the risks of ground level ozone and then check out the daily smog
reports on the EPA website.
This weeks news was filled with commentary and analysis about the Bush administrations energy
plan for the nation. The sweeping strategy, which emphasizes increasing the nations energy supply with
fossil fuels and nuclear power, will have enormous consequences for the nations air quality and global
climate.
Nations energy landscape grows more complex
Some thought the energy crisis of the 1970s was enough to end the nations complacency about
conserving power. But now, nearly 20 years later, our government is declaring another crisis. What happened?
This story on the
Environmental News Network looks at some of the answers:
Bush plan may bolster hybrid cars
The growing market for hybrid cars might get a boost from the Bush energy plan.
The Associated Press reported this week that the White House is calling for $4 billion in tax credits
to spur the sale of hybrid gas-electric vehicles and fuel cells. Automakers say the tax credits would help
offset the high cost of manufacturing cars that run on new technologies.
Are we power hypocrites?
Polls show that lots of Americans say they care about the environment and think energy conservation is a good
thing. But their actions often contradict their words. Richard L. Berke discussed this
issue in the Sunday New York Times. If you havent visited the
New York Times website before, it
is free, but requires that you register.
EPA Website
The Environmental Protection Agency has a useful website that carries environmental news releases
about happenings in the Northeast Region.
Living on Earth: Energy commentary
National Public Radios weekly "Living on Earth" program wraps up the latest environmental
headlines from around the world and often delves into climate change issues. This week, the program featured
a discussion about the Bush Energy plan with Henry Jacoby, a Professor of Management at MIT's Sloan School.
Jacoby, an expert on the energy industry, was interviewed by host Steve Curwood.
The Living on Earth website includes both written transcripts of the half-hour program and audio links.
