In Brief: Air Pollution

PORTSMOUTH - Scientists are heading to seas to study why the Northeast has some of the dirtiest air in the country. The Ronald H. Brown, a federal research vessel, was being launched form the state pier for a month-long pollution study. Organizers say understanding what pollutants are being blown into New England is key to understanding how to improve air quality. For the past three years, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration has cooperated with the University of New Hampshire to measure pollutants from land-based monitoring stations. This summer, the ship and an airplane will provide more information.

U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg, R.N.H., helped get a $1 million grant for the study.
