Background Information on New England's Climate and Air Quality

You have come to the right place to find out more about New England's changing weather, climate, and air quality. This section is designed to provide background information necessary to place the current environmental changes we are experiencing into context.

The climate primer provides background information on the causes of new England's variable climate, and information on extreme weather events and a historical perspective on the region's air quality. This information comes from a booklet titled "New England's Changing Climate, Weather and Air Quality" published by the Climate Change Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. You can view this entire document as a PDF file of E-mail us if you would like a hard copy.

Sam Miller's weather primer provides a solid background on the various factors that affect weather in New England.

New England's climate is also affected by coupled ocean-atmosphere circulation patterns around the globe, including El Nino (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). We provide background information on ENSO, NAO and climate prediction in New England.

You will also find data depicting a variety of climate change in New England over the past century as well as changes in air quality over the past 30 years. "Yes, one of the brightest gems in the New England weather is the dazzling uncertainty of it." from Mark Twain's "Speech on the Weather", New York, 1876; view full text.
