New England Integrated Sciences and Assessments (NEISA)

The New England Integrated Sciences and Assessments is a research program devoted to the development of decision relevant information concerning climate and air quality for the citizens of New England. For more information on the NEISA project and other Regional Integrated Assessments, see the full NEISA description. The primary focus of the NEISA effort is the effect of climate variability and air quality on human health in New England.

Integrated Human Health and Air Quality Research (INHALE)

The scientific community has identified the human health consequences of climate change and variability as an issue of primary concern. The range of related morbidity and mortality effects include those resulting from extreme heat, storms, floods, vector-borne disease, and poor air quality.

Our focus is New England. The region experiences considerable climate variability, both spatially and temporally. The region's air quality is strongly affected by emissions from upwind sources in the Mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, and eastern Canada and by local/regional emissions as well. New England also has a wide variety of landscapes ranging from densely-populated urban areas to largely-forested regions. Finally, many New Englander's have strong cultural and economic ties with their physical and ecological environment.

AIRMAP has undertaken a new initiative to understand how air quality and weather affect human health in New England by:

(1) engaging a wide range of stakeholders in the development of a strategic plan to investigate the link between pulmonary health and air quality; and

(2) using the results to create informed public policy and guide the development of the AIRMAP air quality forecasting research effort.
