About AIRMAP The AIRMAP research project is a multi-institutional effort funded primarily by NOAA's - Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (U.S. Dept. of Commerce). Our research focuses on the analysis of existing climate data, and on the development of new air quality monitoring programs. We are developing a solid background of information that we can use to address New England's changing climate and air quality. In particular we are improving our understanding of the relationship between air quality and weather and determining the causes of climate change in New England. We have established four atmospheric observatories in rural to remote New England locations that extend from the summit of Mt. Washington to the ocean (location map). Air chemistry and meteorological data from these sites is available in real time. We are also collecting meteorological data extending back in time one hundred years (and longer in some cases) to document climate change in New England and examine the causes of change. This meteorological data is also available online. In order to provide an introduction to New England's weather, climate and air quality, we have assembled a range of background material.
New England Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments One of the ultimate goals of AIRMAP is to develop decision relevant information concerning climate and air quality for the citizens of New England. One of our efforts in this regard is an integrated assessment of climate-society interactions in New England. The main objective of this research is to develop, in collaboration with citizens and stakeholders, adaptive management strategies to deal with New England's changing climate and air quality. |
